Conn 54L Baritone Bugle in Bb-F
Date: 1930's, owned by Michael Halpern
The 54L was part of a series of Bb-F bugles Conn produced in the late 1930's, the 50L Soprano and 52L Tenor bugle being the other two.
What Conn said in 1938:
A new Bb bugle with horizontal picton for change to F. Satisfies a popular demand for an
instrument of this type and gives to the drum corps ad added brilliance of tone and an increased
range and musical scope! One outstanding advantage of these bugles is that they are built in the key of
Bb and can play direct from cornet or trumpet scores without rearrangement or transposition.
Valve lies parallel with upper coil of tubing and is provided with a lock which will seal the valve
for use in competition when locked valve rules apply.
